Feeding Koi Recommendation

Steps to Feed Koi

Take the temperature of the water your Koi is living in

Because Koi only eat certain foods in certain temperature.

If the water is under 70 degrees Fahrenheit, feed it once per day or every other day

When the temp lowers to 63 Fahrenheit or lower, feed it every other day. Another option is to feed it a cereal-based diet because cereal breaks down quickly.

In warm water

Koi under 8 inches in length should eat around 5 percent of their own body weight, while Koi over eight inches in length should only eat around two percent of their own body weight.

Provide the nutrition your Koi need

A healthy Koi often have brighter colors than a malnourished one. While your koi can’t just live on live food alone, your koi should enjoy the treats now and then. There are earthworms, which is the favorite of koi, prawns or cockles.

Use koi food in pellet form for their main diet

While Koi eat everything you gave them, most aren’t nutritional and can harm them.

Protect Pond from Algae

Steps to Protect Pond from Algae

Give the algae competition

For plant-only ponds you will need to establish a plant ratio that covers 70% of the water surface to compete for the nutrients that algae feeds on. The addition of beneficial pond bacteria can also be used to compete for nutrients against algae. Other nutrient control measures can be done manually such as raking the pond surface or vacuuming the pond walls and bottom to remove muck.

Shade a Koi pond that has little plant coverage with a pergola, a sail shade, or even pieces of Styrofoam during the sunny summer months.

Pond colorants can also be used to shade the water. There are mostly available in black and blue options and are non staining and non toxic.

During Spring and Summer

Plan on 10% water changes weekly and using a dechlorinator before adding fresh water.

Get an ultraviolet sterilizer unit

Will control free floating single-celled algae. Combine this with an external filter for the UV unit for best results.

Create your own external filter (look up “skippy filter” on internet) or buy one to help convert the ammonia waste that fish produce to nitrites, and nitrate.

Control the resulting nitrites and nitrates with water changes, and add floating plants such as water hyacinth, water lettuce, or others to help consume excess nitrates.

Allow your pond to become established

The pond walls will over time host heterotrophic and chemotrophic (beneficial) bacteria. Heterotrophs consume organic, carbon based waste like fish food, fish waste and dead vegetation, while chemotrophs will help remove toxins like ammonia from the water.

Let the filter become well-established & remove algae

String algae or blanket weed algae occurs when free floating algae is controlled, but there is an excessive amount of nutrients in the pond. Allow your filter to become established and remove this type of algae with a toilet brush. Twist the string algae around the brush like you would cotton candy and discard it. String algae are most prevalent in new ponds and will usually be controlled as the pond matures.

Add aeration to your pond

Aeration stimulates microbial activity and adds essential oxygen and circulation to the pond which deters algae growth and reduces anaerobic digestion of waste.

Pond Plants: Floating, Submerged, and Lily Like Aquatics

Floating Plants

Duckweed

These tiny green leaves float on top of the water, lighter green and grass green in color . It is an excellent natural food for pond fish. Each plant is smaller than the eraser on a number 2 pencil and a smallest plant in the plant species world!

Fairy Moss

Another plant that Koi love to eat. The tiny leaves can be green or reddish to dark reddish brown. Sunlight and water temperature determines the color of the plant.

Frogbit

Tiny white flowers in July and August that are not very significant. Frogbit is a miniature floating plant with shiny green foliage that is 1 to 2 inches across. It is said to kind of look like the chin of a frog in the water, thus the name.

Water Hyacinth

The water has to be warm, above 75 degrees. They need to be crowded together. You can make a ring out of tubing to confine them. Koi love to eat the roots so keep them separate from the fish.

Water Lettuce

More compact growing and the leaves have a more intricate pattern.

Submerged Plants

Anacharis

bright green and feathery provides hiding place for small fish and a place for them to spawn. Helps keep the water clear and clean, great plant for green water, and use 1 bunch for every 2′ of surface area.

Hornwort

Bright green and feathery. Turns almost a black color in the winter, provides hiding places for the fish and a place for them to spawn (lay eggs). Under water oxygenators and also absorb dissolved materials in the water such as fish waste. Helps keep the water clean and clear. Great plant for GREEN WATER.

Parrot’s Feather

Helps to soften the edges of the pond with its lacy and feathery look. It is great for fish that are spawning because it is nice and soft. The stems are feathery looking and a medium bluish green in color. It can be potted or grown floating on the water.

Lily Like Aquatics

Banana Lily

Swollen tubes that resemble a bunch of bananas. Underwater leaves are round to elliptical with a wide sinus and may be up to 3 inches across by 2 inches from the stem to the edge of the leaf. Flowers are 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide and are white. This is a floating plant with small white flowers that extend above the surface of the water and very unique.

Floating Heart

The leaves are heart-shaped, thus the name of the plant. The yellow star-shaped flowers persist through May, June, July, August and September.

Four-Leaf Clover Variegated

Placed in deeper water and submerge 6 to 18 inches. The plant is on the bottom and the leaves float on top of the water, just like a lily.

Mosaic

The Mosaic plant has small leaves that are grouped in a mosaic tile pattern. The color of the leaves will vary from red, to pink, and green. Mosaic also produces tiny yellow flower flowers in the summer and about 6″ below the surface and the leaf clusters will spread about 2’ across.

Water Hawthorne

Grows and blooms in cool/cold water of late fall until the warm water of early summer when it then goes dormant. In early fall when the water is cooler again, it starts the cycle again and begins to grow and bloom. The white fragrant flowers are present from September until April. The flowers are held slightly above the mottled foliage that is oblong green. The undersides of the leaves are red in color and flowers have a slight vanilla fragrance.

Water Poppy

The flowers are 2 to 2-1/2 inches across with red centers. The foliage is dark green and glossy and heart-shaped and 2 to 3 inches across. Lemon yellow, poppy-like flowers in July, August and September are a lovely contrast to the glossy green upright leaves.

Water Snowflake or Water Fringe

Flowers are 3/4 inches across and are bright yellow and star-shaped and “fringed”. The foliage is 2 to 3 inches across and heart-shaped and green with bronze blotches.

Very fragrant flowers Huge large cup shaped, double flowers are pure white and up to 10 inches across.

Chawan Basu

Creamy white single flowers edged in deep pink flowers are 5 to 7 inches across and eaves grows 14 to 16 inches across.

Chinese Double Rose

Flowers are 10 to 12 inches across. Flowers are deep rose colored and fully double and free flowering. Grows 2′ to 3′ tall and leaves grow 16 to 20 inches across.

Empress

Flowers are 10 to 12 inches across. Flowers are white edged with pinkish-red. Grows 4 to 5′ tall and leaves grow 18 to 20 inches across.

Evening Shower

Double pink flower on a dwarf plant. Grows 1 to 1-1/2 feet.

Rosy Clouds

Reddish pink flowers are 5 to 6 inches across. Wonderful bloomer, semi dwarf, and vigorous dark green foliage. Grows 3 to 4′ tall.

Frankly Scarlet

Single bright rose flowers and grows 5′ to 6′ tall.

Perry’s Giant Sunburst

Large double yellow flowers grow 10 to 13 inches across. The outer petals are pale green. Flowers are held high above the base of the plant and fragrant flowers have 24 or 25 petals.

Green Maiden

Flowers change from the first day from a soft pink to a pale yellow by the third day and the flowers are 2 to 3 inches across. Grows 1 to 3′ tall and leaves grow 18 to 20 inches across.

Nucifer Hindu

Very fragrant semi deep pink flowers that have 24 petals. Flowers are 9 to 12 inches across and heavy bloomer. It is not uncommon to see 3 different colored flowers on the same plant, all in different stages of blooms.

Lavender Lady

Pinkish lavender at the outer edge and white single blooms near the center. Slight fragrance and flowers are 11 to 12 inches across. Huge leaves 24 to 26 inches across.

Lutea

Rich yellow flowers with slightly lighter tips that are 7 to 11 inches across and slight fragrance.

Momo Botan

Dwarf growing lotus that has deep rose pink color and peony-shaped double flowers. Flowers are 4 to 6 inches across and stay open later in the day.

Mrs. Perry D. Slocum

Very fragrant semi double blooms that open deep pink and change to yellow and then pale creamy yellow. Flowers are 9 to 12 inches across and very fragrant. Heavy bloomer and it is not uncommon to see 3 different colored flowers on the same plant, all in different stages of blooms. Leaves grow 18 to 23 inches across and plant grow 4′ to 5′ tall.

Pink Bowl

True dwarf lotus plant that has silvery pink peony style flowers that are semi double and 4 to 6 inches across. The flowers are creamy white with bright pink edges.

Roseum Plenum

Deep rose pink with yellow centers. The flowers are single and 8 to 10 inches across, free flowering, and very fragrant. Leaves are 18 to 20 inch across.

Russian Red

Deep rose pink with yellow centers. The flowers are single and 8 to 12 inches across, free flowering, and slight fragrance.
